PUBLIC RECORDS

Public Records Policy

How we obtain the footage behind our reporting.

What we request

We request police body camera and dash camera footage to document individual law enforcement encounters. We start with cases found in public jail and court records.

Our initial requests are in Florida under Florida Statutes Chapter 119. Our requests include the case number, arrest date, and a fee pre-approval.

How we use footage

LawLens Media is an independent, for-profit news organization. We use footage released to us under public records law to produce narrated, single-incident videos on YouTube.

Videos are 12 to 18 minutes long. We state charges as charges and include court outcomes when they are available. We publish with the case documents.

Redactions we accept

For questions about redactions, please reply to the original request email. Please identify the reason for a redaction so we can understand what has been withheld.

Fees

Each request includes a fee pre-approval. Please refer to the amount in the individual request and contact us before doing work that would exceed it.
